Valerian
root extract (0.8 % valerenic acids)
Valerian root has been used as a sleep aid for over
1,000 years. Its ability to help relax the central nervous system,
promote feelings of calm, decrease levels of anxiety and stress, and
enhance sleep are known to millions the world over.
Unlike some prescription sleep aids, valerian is not
known to cause morning grogginess and is non-addictive.
Valerian Root is a tall
perennial herb whose name comes from the Latin word valere,
meaning well-being. Traditionally, Valerian Root has been prescribed as
a natural sedative that works to relax the Central Nervous System (CNS)
in moderate doses and improves overall sleep quality when administered
in higher doses.
In modern
research studies, the active components of Valerian Root have been shown
to provide positive support for:
- Tension,
nervousness and irritability
- Occasional
anxiety and panic
- Mild to
moderate mood changes
- Depressed
mood caused by everyday stress
- Restlessness
and sleep difficulties
Valerian
Root has been clinically shown to promote relaxation, emotional balance
and improve overall sleep cycle within between one (1) to thirty (30)
days of continued use.
Jujube
Seed Extract (2 % Jujubosides)
This
special fruit, sometimes called the "red date," has been used since
ancient times as a nutrient tonic, a blood cleanser, and as an important
adjunctive herb to other tonics, especially in combination with Ginseng.
Jujube, is universally believed in the Asia to build strength and extend
life. Jujube is slightly sedative and laxative and removes obstructions
of the energy flow. Structurally, the jujubosides are nearly identical to the
active constituents found in ginseng, an herb that is traditionally used
as a sedative and a tonic. The herb has been highly regarded by the
Chinese for centuries for its excellent relaxation properties and
extremely low toxicity, and is now being discovered by western
consumers.
5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)
5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid. The body
makes 5-HTP from tryptophan (an essential amino acid) and converts it to
an important brain chemical known as serotonin. Tryptophan and 5-HTP
dietary supplements help raise serotonin levels in the brain, which may
have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, aggression, appetite,
temperature, sexual behavior, and pain sensation.
Scientists have
researched the emotional health benefits of 5-HTP in clinical and
laboratory settings since the 1970s. In Europe, 5-HTP has been indicated
as a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) used to treat:
- Depression
caused by everyday emotional stress
- Mild to
moderate mood fluctuations
- Nervousness
and occasional anxiety
- Restlessness
and sleep difficulties
- Occasional
headaches
- Fibromyalgia
5-HTP is a nutrient that
acts as a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin and may help to
provide positive support for the regulation of mood, behavior, appetite
and sleep function with continued use.
NN-dimethylglycine HCl
Dimethylglycine,
Vitamin B15, or DMG as it is best known, is a non-protein amino acid
found naturally in animal and plant cells. DMG is produced in cells
as an intermediate in the metabolism of choline to glycine. DMG is
neither a vitamin nor an essential nutrient.
- DMG is a highly
potent "oxygenator" of body/brain tissues.
- DMG has been
touted as a panacea for years.
- DMG can enhance
both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses.
- Early fears that
DMG might be mutagenic now appear to be unfounded.
DMG-containing
calcium pangamate was popular with Russian athletes and cosmonauts
because it was reputed to enhance oxygenation at the cellular level,
reduce fatigue and enhance physical stamina. None of those claims,
however, was ever substantiated.
Lemon Balm
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), a member of the mint
family, has long been considered a "calming" herb. The leaves are
similar in shape to mint leaves, and in fact, come from the same
plant family. Several studies have found that lemon balm combined
with other calming herbs (such as valerian) helps reduce anxiety and
promote sleep.
Contemporary Lemon Balm uses include:
-
Tension and nervous agitation
-
Occasional anxiety and related overactive behavior
-
Restlessness and sleep difficulties
- Mild
mood fluctuations
-
Cognitive functions such as memory and attention
-
Gastrointestinal disturbances
In the United States, Lemon Balm is classified
as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) by the Food and Drug
Administration. Substances that receive a GRAS classification have
maintained a long, safe history of common use in foods or have been
determined to be safe based on proven
scientific research.
Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland that regulates
the sleeping and waking cycle as well as related functions within
the body.
The
primary motivation for the use of melatonin as a supplement is as a
natural aid to better sleep, with other incidental benefits to
health and well-being due to its role as an antioxidant and its
stimulation of the immune system and several components of the
endocrine system.
Clinical research shows Melatonin supplementation may help to
provide positive support to:
- Help you
fall asleep faster
- Help you
sleep all night
- Improve
sleep quality
- Provide
sufficient sleep
-
Eliminate daytime drowsiness and fatigue
Melatonin found in 8
Hour Sleep™ maintains an excellent safety profile and can be
especially helpful for those experiencing sleep difficulties due to
jet lag, shift work, and insufficient exposure to daytime sunlight.
Melatonin has been shown to have no adverse side effects and does
not cause next-day grogginess.
